Michael Hurley – Tin Whistle Tutor 2021

We are delighted to confirm that Michael Hurley will be our Tin Whistle tutor for our ‘Week of Facebook Lives’ from Monday, 28th June to Friday 2nd July. You can access Michael’s class at 4pm each day on our Seosamh Mac Gabhann Summer School Facebook Page.
Since moving to Ballymote, Co. Sligo over 30 years ago, Leeds born tin whistle and flute player Michael has become a mainstay of Traditional Music in South Sligo. He grew up listening to recordings of the great Sligo fiddlers, the Coleman Country Ceili Band and the flute playing of Seamus Tansey and Matt Molloy. Many of the older musicians he played with would have been emigrants from the West of Ireland, including his late father who was also a flute player.
He teaches Traditional Music full time and has been a regular tutor at the Seosamh Mac Gabhann Summer School, as well as the Tubbercurry, Drumshanbo, Scoil Eigse and Keadue Summer Schools. He has had considerable Fleadh success, with many of his pupils becoming established musicians themselves.
Michael, is a long-standing member of Ceoltoiri Coleman, the in-house Sessiun band of the Coleman Centre in Gurteen, and also played in the band ‘Misneach’, alongside PJ Hernon, Declan Folan, Junior Davey and Brian Lofthouse.
He is a founder member of the Swallow’s Tail Ceili Band, who have been wowing ceili and set dancers all over Ireland, Europe and America for the last 25 years.
Michael and his wife Patricia have 5 grown-up children, all of whom are established musicians.
