Holly Geraghty – Harp
We are delighted to announce that we are adding Harp (for intermediate and advanced players) as an Afternoon Class – (2pm to 5pm) to our Summer School 2015, with tutor Holly Geraghty.
Holly hails from Ballindine, a small town in South Mayo steeped in a rich tradition of Irish music. From an early age Holly displayed a huge interest and talent in Irish traditional music. At the tender age of six years Holly began to play the concertina under the tutelage of her mother Bernie Geraghty, a renowned musician and teacher and at the age of eleven she began to play the Irish harp under the tutelage of Gráinne Hambly.
Surrounded by a rich storehouse of Irish traditional music in both her home and locality, Holly quickly developed her own musical style, which brought her to the attention of many Irish traditional music enthusiasts including Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann with whom she toured Britain (2002), North America (2003) and Canada (2003). Holly holds several all Ireland honours including the Senior concertina title (2002) and the Senior Irish harp title (2001) at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.
In 2001, Holly moved to Cork to study music in University College Cork where she was awarded several prestigious awards including the Sean O’Riada memorial prize (2005), Wesleyan Ethnomusicology scholarship (2003), Doc Gleeson Award (2002) and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann scholarship (2001). She subsequently graduated with a first class honour from UCC. Holly was also awarded the TTCT (Teastas i dTeagasc Ceolta Tíre) diploma for teaching the concertina at advanced level by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and the Department of Education and Science in 2003. In 2005, Holly moved to Limerick to undertake a graduate diploma in music education in University Limerick and graduated with a first class honour. In 2006, Holly acted as the resident harp teacher in University College Cork and in 2007 she also became the resident harp teacher in University of Limerick. In 2008, Holly completed a Masters in Irish Traditional performance in University of Limerick. Holly’s current album is entitled Ceolmhar.
